My 7 year old is allowed to cycle to her friends 300 yards away one 90 Degree corner. I have repeatedly taught her to be careful and stick to the left on this corner (we live at the end of a quiet cul de sac) Off she trots tonight, to be returned five minutes later in my neighbours car sporting

Fat lip
Nasty graze to elbow and knee
grazed nose
two mashed up and dripping with blood fingers.

we clean her up and the doctor who lives next door checks her out say fingers arent broken. I recover her bike wheel points left handle bar right, so she obviously gone down hard. When shes stopped crying i ask her what happened?

'well dad i was going round that corner too fast and there was a car coming, so i had to decide, crash into the car or crash into the kerb. i decided to crash into the kerb'

What a girl!

(Despite the jaunty tone of my post i was quite shaken up by it and am having a long hard think about her cycling)

Hmmm - my eldest is 6. His bike handling is excellent - comes off road with me etc, and can do a 10 miler with a chokkie break or two along the way.

BUT. Every now and then, he does something the just reminds me that in terms of cycle/road/speed+distance etc sense terms, he's still at the idiot, and thus highly squishable level. Brings you up short, and makes you question the latitude you're giving.

Glad she's OK.

I feel your pain, its hard deep down not to smother them, even when the inevitable happens. I have an 8 year old and a 3 year old (almost), the 8 year old has had a fair few wipeouts on his bike (over the handle bars, face plant onto a kurb when trying to mount it at an angle etc) and bless him has gotten straight up and carried on when he could.

On the outside i keep him positive and make him carry on and practice etc but on the inside I want him to sit inside on a bean bag and stay still.

Glad she's ok. On the plus side she'll have learned a very valuable lesson without having a major physical trauma. This is a good thing for her even though it's horrendous for the parental nerves. Get her back on the bike asap - and I say this as a mother with strong wrap 'em in cotton wool urges so know they are a b*gg*r to control, so they can grow up to be confident having learned to understand & take risks properly, for want of a better description.

Tell her from me that she's now a proper cyclist.

Any suitable cycle training going on in the area she can attend?

Glad to hear that she made the correct decision re: curb or car!

aahhhhh. Got a 6 yr. old, know how you feel. Big cuddles needed, and let her get back on ASAP. Can you hide in any bushes to keep and eye?

careful hiding in bushes and spying on kids

Sounds like a great, and brave, decision maker.

Why not bring her to our Kids Saturday Bike Club for skills and fun?

Private message for more details.

Glad to hear she's okay, and as has been said, she will have learnt a lesson into the bargain.

Just try to keep the girl pretty until she's married off ;0)

My middle son flies around the garden really fast but has never crashed. If he does it'll be bad. I keep telling him but I don't think they understand until they experience it.

A few weeks ago I was round at a friends house and there was a big bunch of kids, aged from early teens down to about five, all playing on bikes and what they were doing was scary. The whole estate runs down hill and they were pushing their bikes up to the top then flying down the hill in the middle of the road, round bends, through junctions. There was about a dozen of them and I can't believe their parents were letting them. If one of the little kids was coming down the hill and met a car coming up they would've had a bad crash, even if the car stopped.
