I am replacing my touring bike tyres. In the past I have used Specialized Transition K4, which were excellent but seem to be discontinued, and Panaracer Tourguard 700c, which also seem to be discontinued.

I need about 700c x 28 wide, for long-distance touring (cycle camping, 4 panniers, the full load).

What would be the best modern equivalent including a built-in puncture protection belt?

Schwalbe marathon or durano, or conti gatorskins would seem to fit the bill.
I've used all three - though mainly for commuting rather than touring - all seem fine to me. The later two are slightly lighter than the former.

I have 38c on atm. Did put a set of 28c continental touring on a hybrid that I tried. Roll loads better but big difference in feel and with a full load on 28s, rather you than me!

Marathon pluses but in a 35mm. I use the 'Tour' version on one bike as they are slightly meatier as regards the thread. I use full panniers on them too and have never had any problems. I wouldn't want to use anything slimmer though.

Or one of Specialized's armadillo tyres, not had a single puncture yet with those on my go-everywhere hybrid.
(Pulled lots of bits of glass and gravel out that had attempted the feat though  )
