One of the commentators said that Bolt is now the hottest property in world sport! I just dont get it, dont get me wrong-its very impressive how he has brought the record down so much in comparison to the last decade of runners but at the end of the day it is just running in a straight line for 100m. IMHO Alberto Contador, Tiger Woods or Roger Federer's acheivements are much more impressive.

Yes, I'm sort of inclined to agree - without wishing to take due credit away from Bolt et al but there does seem to be a focus on the mens' 100m sprint. A focus that implies it is somehow better/faster/something than other disciplines and sports.

Why, on this very site alone, we have seen great interest in the womens' pole vault and heptathlon... though I suspect there might be something else at play there!

I guess though it's just the way of the (marketing/advertising) world.

.... buyt back to the subject, I recal reading some article quite a few years back about research done into how fast could a human being could possible run, cannot recall what they predicted, hust wondering if Bolt has gone beyond that.

Should be able to go under 9.5.

Just seeing as no-one seems to have said the actual figure yet, that works out at just over 23.5 mph average, in English. I think most cyclists would be hard pressed to do that from a standing start.

Incidentally, can anyone explain why in these events they still have the uncertainty factor of the starting pistol? I.e. what seems to be an indeterminate time between the starter saying "get set" and firing the gun? It seems to be a test of the athlete's reaction time as well as his sprinting ability. How would things change if they started on a countdown like the GTS? I've often wondered about this.
