I think lottery winners always interest me because I think I have very very little chance of winning it,so this story has interested me since I heard it on Talksport.

It's not all plain sailing when you win 9 million quid is it?

Obviously your life is going to change a lot especially if people know you have that sort of money for a start.

Leave job,more time,more boredom,more possessions?

New house,new car?

He went down the usual 'consumerism spend' route - his choice, not the lottery. He started drinking heavily - his choice, not the lottery.

He didn't have to spend everything, he just did as he thought that was what millionaires do. His life could have been so much richer, and he could have experienced so much more.

IIRC there has been some proper research on lottery/pools winners and in fact most of them become happier and stay happier than before.

Becoming an alcoholic is a genetic/personality problem and affects people at every income level.

I can't imagine what you could sensibly do with £9m if you spent it on yourself. I would give most of it away. There again, I have never bought a lottery ticket, so I'm never going to find out.

It is a shame I admit but very likely be the operator and not the tools.

I've thought long and hard what I would do if I won the lottery. Firstly I'd have to buy a ticket. Then I think I'd not tell anyone, at least not until I'd come to terms with it myself as I have a very large family and they'd all suddenly become my best friend over night and the pressure and emotional blackmail of not "sharing" it with them would probably be overwhelming.

I would then do up my current house - double glazing, central heating, new guttering etc. Buy a new but not in your face car (Estate, BMW tourer perhaps). Go on the odd cycle trip.

Once I'd come to terms with it and decided who to give money to (definitely my immediate family and best friend and the odd worthy charity) I'd buy a big house and jack in work and claim I won less than I did. I might become a propert tycoon renting out my current house and buying and doing up other ramshackle houses to rent out. If I liked the tennants I'd then maybe give them the opportunity to buy it at a knock down price.

I wouldn't know what I would do if I won 9m but I probably wouldn't live where I am living.
I wouldn't go down the alcohol route already been there.
Not interested in cars or driving.Thinking about it my job has really kept me on the straight and narrow for many years.

One thing is I would definitely live abroad but alas a lottery win has to happen before I can fulfil my dreams.

I got my last job because my predecessor had won the lottery. She stayed working, just reduced her hours and responsibilities, got herself a fairly nice car, spent some of the rest buying investment properties (it's a good time to do it if you have cash) and is having a great time.

But stories like that don't make people buy or read The Sun, do they.

Some people just don't realise when they are onto a good thing. They just have to hit the self destruct button. Of course he's not the only Lottery winner to lose his winnings. Lotto Lout Michael Carroll frittered away £9.7 million as well as causing misery to his neighbours and destroying a luxury property :welcome:. Still he's got an entry in wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Carroll_(lottery_winner) although no money left.

However as of February 2010, he revealed that he was back on the dole having spent all of his money on crack cocaine, gambling, his family and friends, electronic goods, cars, prostitutes and gold.[13]

On 18 February 2010, he was declared bankrupt, with his ruined mansion[14] being put up for sale.

£9 million....... now what or who could I spend that on? That's nearly as much as some bankers earn in a year ............

I think the interest alone would be enough to have a very comfortable life.

Do they still pay interest on that money?

What is the interest?

I remember Brewsters Millions...."but I should be paying you rent" :welcome:

Yeah I think you need a bit of responsibility to manage that sort of money.
