A bit of plastic saved my life this morning.

I was going down a hill in a cycle lane with two lanes of traffic beside me at about 35mph this morning when I had a sudden jolt that snapped my head back.

A bit of a wobble and then as I composed myself I realised that there was a chip in the middle of the right hand side lense in my Bloc cycling glasses.

I can only assume a stone had been 'fired' from under a car tyre.

If I hadn't been wearing the glasses the stone would have surely penetrated my eye at speed and most likely put me under one of the cars beside me - at best putting me in hospital.

Glasses aren't just good for keeping flies and dust out of your eyes.

Perhaps they should be compulsory for all cyclists ;)

Cycling without eye protection is just selfish.

It should be made law.

Once during the winter something hit me hard in the mouth, similarly it was most likely a chunk of grit or stone off the road flicked up by a passing car. Fortunately I was wearing a buff - otherwise it would have almost certainly gone into my mouth, causing me to choke and die whilst swerving all over the road causing an enormous pile up, fire, and eventually the apocolypse.

I sometimes wonder how strong cycling glasses are when it comes to being hit by a stone. Twice in the past I have been hit by a flying stone and it was not pleasant.

The first time I felt as if I had been punched in the chest, but luckily it had hit my ID card that I used to carry round my neck and it softened the blow and spread the impact. I think it would have severely hurt if it had made contact with just my body.

The second time, a stone flew out from underneath the wheel of a HGV, there was an almighty crack on the frame of my bike followed by a stinging pain in my leg. At first I thought the pain in my leg was a wasp stinging me but then realised the stone had ricocheted onto it.

One day when I get a pair of glasses that are u/s, I will put them to the test

Maybe time for compulsory mouth/nose filters. During the spring/summer/autumn I often unwittingly swallow various insects thst could choke or even worse poison me, possibly causing me to fall off the bike and injure passing pedestrians or falling into or under passing motor vehicles causing undue stress and torment to the drivers. Discuss.

Not really, it would probably just cost the local council some of there council tax money, to just put you and your bike into a wheelie bin and cart you off to the tip to be forgotten about.

This thread has reminded me to ask, whereabouts (apart from Lidl) can I pick a cheap pair of cycling glasses, something for a round a tenner if there are any?

I have been hit in the face by mystery projectiles that appear out of thin air, big bug perhaps, and all manner of smaller flies that have got stuck in my eye and insist on staying firmly wedged in there.

if you can find some that have been tested to EN 166f then they will have a fairly good impact protection from stones etc.

http://www.safetyspecs.co.uk/BS EN 166.htm there are a huge range of stylish wraparound safety specs available. we have some yelow mirror effect ones in work . sadly for me i have prescription ones that are not wraparound style.

Pulling through
Descending into a valley one day I passed a truck at speed and felt a small ping on my chest.

Upon returning home and retrieving the pocket-sized edition of God Delusion from my breast pocket I found a sharp stone embedded all the way into chapter seven. Of course he would deny it but I now worship Dawkins as a god.
