Since learning this, I have now seen it explained on two different website whilst I look for the answer to the question I'm about to ask ask below :laugh:

So, my next question is, I have just bought an old George IV era (1936 - 52) pint glass with the number 545 (York). It has an 'A' underneath the number, but what does that 'A' stand for??

I know 'C' is Castleford when dealing with things like a '301', but..... 'A'??

The glass doesn't appear to be very well made, and I am wondering if it is in fact a wartime one, seeing as the quality dropped during that time.

:okay:

P.S. I have also just bought an old George V (1910 - 35) stoneware half pint mug stamped for Camden (number 524) off Ebay for a tenner. A bit like the old pewter tankards, they used to use stoneware mugs and jugs too.

Got three stoneware halfpint mugs, not certain of the the numbers of the top of my head. But they didn't cost a tenner.

I'm losing money here!!

I love to have a good nosey around charity shops and junk shops, you never quite know what you will find, but I find that Ebay is still the best, even of you have to ask a lot of dosey sellers what the number actually is

Honestly, they add everything and then say that it is Crown Stamped, without giving the number.

Yes, but what IS the fecking Crownstamp you idiot!!??

Either that or they photograph the number and mess it up so much that you cannot actually see what it is, therefore defeating the whole purpose!!

That said, my favourite sale of all time was actually rather mundane, but it was for a humble Nonic glass stamped 253 for Warwickshire (I had no '200s' at this point. I now also have a 252 for Cardiff, giving one of the few consecutively placed numbers I have, but, anyway).

The seller didn't have a clue, and yet, had photographed it all so well that it was as clear as day what it was.

That is the sort of serene listing I can live with!!

397?

*Frantically looks it up*

Herts..... I have none of those, but I have many, many others, including off the top of my head (the ones without places I can't remember without looking them up or it is either West Yorkshire or Derbyshire, the pigeons of the UK glass making world and hardly bothering about):

2 City Of London, 6 Birmingham, 16 and 18 West Yorkshire or Derbyshire (I think), 29 Harringey, 41 Hull, 64 Newcastle, 76 Manchester, 147 Liverpool, 252 Cardiff, 253 Warwickshire, 270 Coventry... I think, the common as muck 301 and 303 West Yorkshire or Derbyshire, 317 Doncaster, 323 and 324 Gateshead, 386 and 387 Surrey (I think), 414 and 418 West Yorkshire or Derbyshire, 465 Scottish Highlands, the common as muck 478 St Helens, 490 Bristol, 524 Camden, 542 543 and 544 (all somewhere like Newham in London), 545 York, the common as muck 562 Bury, 589 Brent .... 886 and 887 Bath and North East Somerset... (I think), Euuurrrrggghhhh, you get the jist.
I don't have many numbered above 1000 though, especially over 1500 except for the common as muck 2043 and the 2137.

The numbering list:

I need to get them all out and list them properly (as well as get out more!).

It came from a pub, now gone, where a hasty exit had to be made out the back.
I wasn't leaving the Guinness as that was bought and paid for. Some 500 miles away!

Oh and 10, 15 and 27? I have none of those either. I have nothing west of Somerset, anything Scottish other than the Highlands and Argyll And Bute (It is odd, Scottish and Welsh ones seem to be rather thin on the ground), and, probably something from Kent, but sod all outside the general Londonshire area.

Seriously, other than 465 and 1364 for the Scottish Highlands (and my Irish one.... Ironic that that), I have genuinely never seen any other Scottish ones (and I live here!!), and as for Wales, I only have a solitary 252 for Cardiff (stamped as being the property of 'The Red Lion Pub' in some district or other. Yes, the Red Lion, not the Red Dragon as you'd expect).

Also, Devon and Cornwall, I have never seen one.
