fietsverhuur = bicycle hire. When I put that in Google I got this rather useful looking site that has an English version too.

Often in Amsterdam you can cycle the "wrong way" down one way roads. No entry signs with "Uitgezonderd Fiets" or some abbreviation of that, signed underneath.

It's a while since I lived there, but my memory is you are expected to use bike lanes and obey cyclists' traffic lights - some bigger junctions can be a bit confusing due to the road bike lanes and pavement all convering and having different light phases.

You have to use bike lanes. I can also confirm that there are slightly different traffic rules in Holland (give way to traffic from the right) on top of an unregulated traffic code. My tip, just take it easy and go with the flow, of which there should be plenty in Amsterdam !
My experience of Amsterdam is that, regardless of what you're supposed to do, it's pretty much a cyclist's free-for-all. Organised chaos, which no-one seems to bat an eyelid at. It would give some of our headcam warriors several heart attacks.
Indeed organised chaos, it is easy going, but it is pretty well organised (other then the permitted chaos) and underpinned by rules which will be used if and when required. I am not trying to scare anybody, just making you aware as some tourist think everything goes, well it does until you are picked up on it.

One of my favourite signs. :-)

And be prepared for the fact that on-coming traffic won't give you much room.
