I flew out to Hamburg taking panniers with me and hired a bike from Zweiradperle. This firm, near the main station sell a wide range bikes and types and run a repair service in addition to bike hire. The quality and range is much better than your average bike hire facility. To get out of the city, I took the Metronom train to Bucholz in der Nordheide and then cycled down to my base in Schneverdingen. These trains have specialist carriages for bikes.
There are an enormous number of cycling possibilities on quiet country roads, busier roads with cycleways, cycle routes in the forest or on the heath itself and even wooden trackways through the bogs. There are many good refreshment stops marked on the specialist cycling maps.
The next three days were circular routes from and back to the hotel exploring different types of scenery. The last day was spent cycling back up to Bucholz via a different route and then catching the train back to Hamburg.
Below are some photos. Again I was lucky with the weather, warm, mostly sunny but not too hot, little wind and no rain at all.
