A first Carbon wheel-set……

I have a barely used one of these (2024 Burgamont Grandurance 8). That I intended to use for ‘Gravel riding’ - and it’s never happened.

It basically a relaxed Geometry ‘All-Road’ bike. So by changing off-road based tyres, removing Gravel type mudguards and not much else - I’d could have a very useable Summer road-bike. Which at this point would be way more interesting.

And from that I’d be really interested in trying my first Carbon Wheelset. (Wheels are 700c with 12x100 and 12x142 Thru Axles). And it’s a GRX 1x11 Groupset.

Bike was only £1600 odd new. So there’s no point (?) going ballistic on new wheels. But if I could save some weight, add some strength, add some bling 😉 and get me on my first Carbon wheels - I’d absolutely love to make the change.

Are these fashionable for a reason ?

Or there’s various Chinese sets I keep seeing advertised on Facebook for £6-£700 (?) and numerous users rave over…….

Thoughts on whether it’s worth it at this price point, starting with a better base bike, not buying cheaper Carbon wheels or……?

There's a lot of smaller bike shops who will build you something better than what your looking at for less.

I dont think it's a silly idea. I don't know the frame but some frame are very much upgradeable like spez allez or Cannondale caad...

Weight saved on the wheels esp rims is worth much more than on the frame ime...

These guys are worth a try, built my DT swiss gravel wheels up plus others.
Several clubmates are more than happy with there carbon wheels as well.

If you have 47mm tyre clearance, I highly recommend the low rolling resiatance super comfy (for a ~95Kg rider kitted up) 45mm Caracal Race tanwall tyres for tarmac lanes and dry mild offroad. If less clearance, they do a 40mm variant, both ~£43 at Winstanleys.

The speed from my rear Race is the closest free speed I can compare to my 2.35" G One Speeds from ~10 years ago, the old Big Ones, that were like a rocket.

I look at those often😁. I know that carbon wheels will make no difference to my riding as I am not chasing gains...merely exercise. However, that doesn't stop me wanting some and having to fight the temptation twice a week. 😂

I checked them out and reviews across Reddit etc and they do look to be well liked.

Gcn has just done a video with Hunt wheels . The back up service seems very good as they stock spares for ever wheel set they've made .
I run carbon wheels on best bike (giant slr 40mm deep) and box section alloy wheels on bike 2 weights are pretty comparable but I would always go for the carbon ones on ever occasion except really windy as they do feel the wind which is ok when your use them . Carbon wheels to me just feel better and mine are certainly more aero the the alloy wheels . Do you need carbon wheels no are they nice to have Id say yes

Think there's a number of lesser/unknown brand name wheels available now for less than the £6-700 you indicate. You'd want to investigate further for the specific wheelset.
