It all started with an unexpected gift from @Cubist last Thursday - three pies from Bolster Moor Farm shop. He mentioned the fact that they were championship pies and they were gratefully received and reserved for sustenance on a planned mini cycling adventure starting the following day.
Driving up to Darlington to see a friend and to start the bike ride on Friday, I called in at Greenwoods of Boroughbridge to pick up some pies to share with my friend. I apologised to John, the owner for my reduced order of three pies and explained that I had some Huddersfield pies on board which reduced my capacity for his products. When I identified the source of the competition for his wares he was very complementary and said that Bolster Moor had just about swept the board with their products in a recent butchery competition winning most of the categories and leaving the likes of him to pick up gold medals - he got nine or so. He threw in one of his new pork and stilton pies for my delectation and opinion. Anyway to cut to the chase:
On the left a standard pork pie, on the right the pork and stilton. The pork pie scored 10/10 and the pork and Stilton 7/10. Blue cheese lovers will score the pork and stilton more highly and it was a credit to John that I managed to eat the whole pie instead of gagging as I usually do with blue cheese in my mouth.
Next is the pork and pepperoni from Bolster Farm eaten within five miles of the previous two pies - c'mon I'd managed to resist them for twenty five hours...
Scored 8/10 A sound solid pie with a soupcon of saltiness introduced by the pepperoni.
Onto literally a blind tasting. A fidget pie. Eaten in the dark by the River Tees. I could only hazard a guess at the content identifying pork topped by something savoury and sweet. Cubist's subsequent divulgence of its constitution made sense of my tentative tasting notes. I wonder if its taste will be different if I have sight of it the next time I have one. 8.5/10
And the final Bolster Farm Shop pie was their championship pork pie. Truly deserving 10/10. Lots of filling and flavoursome two days after purchase. Consumed for breakfast Saturday morning.
The weekend was rounded off with a final Greenwoods pie. Bolster Moor is about to be added to my pie chart helping to assuage Cubist's reservations about pie makers to the west of Leeds not being featured. A great way to end one month and start another.
