It's fair to say that the Japanese don't get Christmas, which makes it an amusing and unashamedly commercial experience when you're there. Basically, for the Japanese it's become the time you get together with someone you like, as opposed to New Year, which is the big family midwinter celebration.

Although, since Santa is a contraction of Saint Nicholas, I think he's allowed to be Christian...
