This comes up every so often. BBC North West had it as a "news" item the other night. IIRC they did something similar a few years ago.

Of you've ever been to York Knavesmire there's a little cottage in between the in and out access road (in the middle of a Y).

Always wondered what the story was behind that one.

That section of motorway was going to be the only enclosed section in the UK. The winds were that high/strong at times when it was surveyed they planned on enclosing as it went "over the top", from the reservoirs to J21/J20.

I was involved in building sections of the Pennine bridleway, as well as other projects, in this area. The video that @Diogenes The Sarcastic posts brings back memories. Turning up for work and finding the machines frozen yet again. Everything, including yourself, muddy and wet. Honestly - great days!
And you'd jump at the chance to do it again!

I am sure the M62 story was always a myth. Compulsory acquisition sets the price and motorways (current cost £30M/mile!) won't divert for a recalcitrant farmer.

But I remember - back in the day - the local council bought up a row of houses to expand a carpark (boy, that's a terrible sentence). One old lady refused to move, and rather than create an ugly situation, they let her stay. It broke my heart every time I passed by. This lonely little cottage (think single story terrace, but detached) sitting in the middle of an asphalt wasteland. I gather her cats all got run over. When she finally died, they demolished it, increasing the car park from 200 space (or whatever) to 204,
