I don't buy the geology thing. The French can do this with their roads when they meet a slight hiccup in the local topography...

If they road builders had really wanted to I'm sure they could have quite easily overcome any issues for that relatively distance. Physically I'm sure it was perfectly feasible.

I suspect cost was a factor. Not only buying out the farmer, but in addition to that the the cost of whatever architectural trickery was required to overcome the topographic issues was the problem. Combined together it was probably simply a lot cheaper and less hassle to do as they did, so it was the combined financial constraint that sunk it.

I doubt the farmhouse would be much of a cost consideration beside building the Motorway. I would expect it simply to be cheaper to build it the way they did, and in an area with lots of space there's not the same requirement to squeeze everything together.

Part of the M6 near Shap has a couple gaps that are wide enough to have sheep fields and one even has a minor road running through the middle of it. I've organised a group ride that went down that road before, partly for the novelty of cycling down the middle of the motorway.

The heart shaped copse which can bee seen from the M6 going through shap is said to have been planted as a memorial...

...of course it's a myth, it's shape is purely coincidental.

That section of motorway was going to be the only enclosed section in the UK. The winds were that high/strong at times when it was surveyed they planned on enclosing as it went "over the top", from the reservoirs to J21/J20.

And, I recall heated too?

It was dubbed the Motorway That Would Never Close
Back in the early 80's(?), there was a documentary made about it, during a winter
A lot of the film was with the Traffic Police of the day, I still remember the clips of the Range Rovers pulling laden artics

From about 36:00

Just watched part of it, sadly, I doubt the dressing down that they give the driver, who came onto the closed M-way, at about 50:00 would be allowed nowadays?
