I'm cycling up to Darlington tomorrow and will be passing through five towns with wonderful pies...
Otley - Weegmans butchers
Ripon - Appleton's pie shop
Thirsk - Johnson's butchers
Northallerton - Thompson's butchers
Darlington - Taylor's butchers

I need to exercise some restraint so I'm going to shun their stand and gala pies and focus on their standard pie sized products

Sod the weight loss tomorrow.:hungry:

Enjoy!

Did I miss the forum pie ride btw?

No. You didn't miss the forum pie ride. I'm treating this as a recce as there's a couple of pie shops on the ride that I haven't sampled before. I suppose now is as good a time as any to start in earnest with some planning to incorporate a route into one that qualifies for a 100km DIY Audax.

Some intense research is called for if only to make the ride accessible to those who need to get to/from it by public transport from further afield.

Good for you, mate. That must be a good 60-70 miles. You deserve a pie or two for that.

Vernon, these "pies" of which you speak...are you gathering fodder in a pannier for consumption later, back at the cave, or using them as fuel for the journey?

Which pie shop in Darlington you going to visit, I might know it,
Just realised your list, well Taylors pork pies are the best in the area, have to be hot though.Another place is becks butchers in the covered market, the steak pies are the best in the north east.

I'm a Darlington lad who left the town in 1977 for a life in Leeds.

Taylors pork pies are best eaten hot as are Appletons from Ripon. The others are fine hot or cold. I don't recall Beck's in the market though I do miss Zissler's, a pok butcher long soince closed that did the best sausage rolls ever in Bondgate.

Good luck with the research, your dedication sounds beyond reproach
I'm certainly up for a pie ride, logistics depending obviously as it's a fair trek fro me. But, if there are pies involved, it certainly sounds tempting...
