Yesterday some oncology results came back with an all clear for all the lumps and bits they removed and tidied up last month.

Today at hospital the results of the latest MRI and manipulations on my knee: it's still unstable, no decent prognosis for getting any better on its own, no longer suitable for minor surgical fixes & I'm still too young for anything more major yet. I'm on for more physiotherapy and they're building me a bespoke knee brace.

hey hum.

I may well have a small bike sale and just hang onto only the folders for multi modal travel.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Sorry to hear your not 100% ok. But don't give up the road bikes just yet. Wait and see how things go, I hope you do all right with the folders. Take care.

Thanks for the kind words folks, just having a bit of a down day yesterday as I had expected them to send me on my way with a note to MTFU and stop moaning it is sore. delighted to dejected in 24 hours. I'm in no hurry for a bionic replacement really but that seems to be the fallback position they've got now as they can't seem to get it properly firmed up again with minor twiddles and tweaks in there. Hopefully the fitted brace will be a bit more of a sturdy and stable thing keeping it all in line and not encouraging the wrong bits to rub over each other and cause trouble anymore.

I'll hang fire on thinking about the bikes bar maybe my Roadie, Its not getting the use it should nor ridden like it deserves, I think someone else on here could spruce it up and let it fly better tan me.

Assuming the knee arthritis isn't severe, look into hyaluronic acid injections. You might be able to get them done on the NHS if the specialist feels they are indicated, or privately they cost a couple of hundred probably. I have been having them every 18 months or so in my left knee, seem to help. I'm probably due another oil change but that bit of me seems ok right now!

Replacement should be a last resort, Hope the knee brace provides some relief

Hope you're feeling better today.
Maybe new knee is the way to go.
I had my SI joint (lower back /pelvis) fused 8 years ago, after 2 years of faffing about with physio, botched half job op, trying to sort things by myself at the gym, etc.
Fusion was best thing that happened. :okay:
As long as I keep active without overdoing it and visit the osteopath occasionally I am fine. All the work I did at the gym got me fit for the op and recovery.
Hope you find the best solution for you.
Best wishes.

Thanks never heard of those, are they akin to the Steroid injections I keep having mentioned to me? I've been warned off those till I hit 50 at least (46 now) as for the temporary relief each injection gives, it shortens the lifespan of the knee a bit more and they're determined I shouldn't have a new knee until 55 - their thinking is with the current technology, replacement gives you 2 x 10 year goes at it so come 20 years after my first op I'd be done with walking and could conceivably still be of working age when that happens. hopefully things will improve and by the time I get there, the long term options will be better tho.

. Arthritis is a by product of the problem, it all stems from being hit and run a few years back, the corner of the car went through that knee first and poor treatment by the first consultant I had (IMO, tho he disagrees!) along with none of us realising the extent of the damage quite quick enough though MRI's & more detailed arthroscopes etc. The whole structure of my knee is less stable and less weight/rotation bearing than it was. I'm getting some specialist exercises to build ip the muscles in the right way to add core strength to the leg and consider the help the other one can give too more now.

Guy in his late fifties had new knees and went from almost wheelchair bound to walking the golf course..
pain gets you down, look at all possible fixes , im inclined to agree with regs post above..cost age etc..

i looked at paying for my father in laws hip being done private as he was on a long waiting list 10yr ago at 84.
7k for the new hip then so a knee will be similar cost id think.

hope you can keep your bikes and get back on soon bud

No, ha is viscosupplemetation. There are a few brands, Ostenil, Durolane, Synvisc, Euflexaaa. Either in 3 injections or a single injection. I now have the single ones, possibly a little more painful to inject as it's thicker

Steroid only good if lots of inflammation.

Do you have arthritis is all compartments? If not, there are partial replacements, or osteotomies, where they realign the bones to offload the affected part

Don't really want to be doing total knees until at least 60

Private cost 10k+ But will vary by hospital, here's examples for the NW (you'll be at the hospital where your surgeon of choice operates of course, NHS hospitals often have private units too)

You want someone who does lots. My spec does 200 a year, and pioneered the use of computer assisted technology for example.

All the best from me here in Leeds. You have my sympathy.A knee sufferer myself for nine years.Pain, grinding bone swelling, leg locked straight, not able to bend it to get home on my motorcycle.Having to be taken off the 'floor' in a cage sat on a chair. So it got to a point where i was interviewed by ATOS the company's health people. My job was on the line, they were fed up of me having two and three days off to allow the swelling to go down,or laying out in the first aid room for a couple of hours.
So i put my foot down, excuse the pun.Give me a private operation or get the NHS to take my knee serious. They did neither,so i saw my GP it took two operations to put right. And i was on light duties for the last three years of my employment, before i took vol redundancy.
I hope you don't have to go through what i went through before it was all sorted. So best wishes, for a full recovery.

I had better add it took two operations, because i messed up the first.I was so afraid of losing my job.I went back to work, full duties before the Surgeon had finished with me,and during a night shift, the good work that the Surgeon had done,i knackered it up.He went ballistic when he saw me,he did it again and kept me off work for nine weeks.
