A new but minor incendiary moment.

Last night I took a pal along to Hansa's Gujerati vegetarian restaurant in Leeds. Having stuffed myself with an eat all you can Chinese buffet the night before in Newcastle and a generously sized big breakfast on Newcastle's Quayside this morning I fancied something a tad lighter hence my choice of Hansa's.

Having perused the drinks menu and made a choice I put it down and continued the conversation I was having with my pal. As the conversation progressed I became increasingly aware of the smell of burning - bit like an intense freshly extinguished candle smoke mingle with smouldering card. Looking around I couldn't see the source until I looked downwards and directly in front of me where I saw a hole in the drinks menu created by the tea light candle that I'd leant the menu against when I put it down. I pinched out the flames and apologised profusely to Mrs Hansa the owner through the loud guffaws of my pal.

She was amused and very gracious and didn't surcharge me.

The food was great by the way and I recommend any locals to visit it. The bar next door, The Reliance is also worth patronising. The 7.5% alcohol perry that i drank there might have been responsible for my lapse in concentration leading to the hot menu.

Nice one,Hansa's did the catering for my brothers wedding in Pocklington, they kept bringing plates of food out, much more than my brother requested or paid for and they gave away loads of free copies of their cookbook. Excellent food and I intend to go to the restaurant next time I'm in Leeds, thoroughly recommend it - even if it is fire damaged.

The food, as you've experienced, is wonderful - not enough to convert me to vegetarianism but enough to keep me interested.

Hansas is gorgeous - and it's good to hear that it's still going. When I lived in Bradford in the early 90s I went there for 'posh curries' along with the Agra in Shipley. It's great to hear that both of those restaurants are still doing well.

Hansas used to have a restaurant in Bradford as well as Leeds. The Bradford restaurant closed about ten years ago but the original in North Street Leeds is still going strong. Hansa Dabhi the owner is still very hands on and is often found in her restaurant.

The Agra has become a chain of fifteen restaurants - I had to look it up and to my surprise there's now one a couple of miles from me in Chapel Allerton. If I hadn't got some steak an kidney pies cooking for tonight's meal I'd be over to Chapel Allerton tonight.

We've never been to Hansa's - ought to make a pilgrimage to the place one day when we're 'oop t'north', but we've got the book. I can highly recommend it (even if you can't get hold of a free copy ) - excellent recipes in there.

I envy you the good Indian restaurants. We had a fair few in birmingham, even in the 70s and early 80s but they are thin on the ground here in Bournemouth

I can recall, way back in the '70s, being out on a business trip in Bath, we were staying overnight, and rather than eat at the hotel, my colleagues and I opted, for some reason, to go out and look for a curry. We paced up and down every street in the city, looking for an Indian restaurant. In the end we found one - but it was a travesty compared to what I'd been used to in Bradford.

I hope someone from the Bath area can set me right that things are better there now!
