...at 52 next birthday I'm never, ever, going to need a better, lighter, faster, road bike than the one I've got now.

I can now go away and concentrate on being a better mountain biker, which was my first love anyway, and use the road cycling, and the gym, as a proper means to an end, getting and staying fit enough to enjoy enduro style riding, trail centres and a few multi-day off-road challenges,

There I've said it.

Does anyone ever need one?

At 50 I'm about 20 months into project roadie, and I would like 2!

A carbon road jobbie and a TT bike. However getting either of them through the family exchequer, and actually buying it are two different things.

You're going to need a really light and well-equipped MTB though. No more than 12.3 kg or so on a full-susser, minimum 120mm travel, preferably XT 3x10, with an 11-36 cassette to winch you up those climbs...............

Really? You don't subscribe to the "all the help I can get" school of thought?
If I did, subscribe that is, I'd go on a diet and hit the weights room more often. Way more effective than a new bike.

I delight in annoying my club by riding inappropriate bicycles in their TT's. I'm the fastest on fixed, as I'm the only one on fixed. I don't need a race to tell me the truth about my decaying state, merely a mirror.;)

Carbon, no ta, not at nigh on 100kg.

ditto - except add on a couple of years
I still need a mountain bike, a CX bike, a TT bike, a track bike, a 'bent, an 'ordinary' and

a bigger garage to store them in

You do the diet and weights then after that you do the lighter bike. After that it is downhill or doping.

I don't understand. What did need ever have to do with it? I believe the formula (chez nous, at any rate) is:

If (enjoyment I/we will get out of better, faster, lighter bike) > (expense x difficulty of explaining expenditure to other half) then the bike should, clearly, be purchased.

(NB: if the bike is a tandem, clearly "difficulty of explaining expenditure to other half" = 0)

I think the context of my 2nd paragraph is all.;)
