"maam, you don't understand me there is a problem with your Windows...'
.
Nobody ever rings me up trying to sell me anything. If they did I would say I have just had double glazing put in, so my Windows are okay.
Is this some random thing. I.E. just ring anyone up and assume they have a computer?

If quizzed, they will explain that they (Microsoft) have been getting messages from your computer about errors, and that those error messages somehow contain your phone number.

So yes, they are simply dialling phone numbers at random, in the knowlege that many of the people they reach will have a PC and a high proportion will be running Windows.

Actually saying you have double glazing doesn't always work... They then ask you how old and suggest that you might need to replace them. I've found asking if they do wooden sash windows seems to work!

My wife led them on for about 20 minutes before asking if the big Apple logo on the back made any difference

I like to keep them going, check spelling, retype, no- that's not working then come out with.

"hang on a moment, I just need to put another sheet of paper in. Will this take much more time as my typewriter is running out of ink?"

Well done to the OP, Microsoft support annoying was one of my favourite passtimes until I got this...
