Tip, try and avoid big puddles as they are an indication of a low spot in the road.

Picture of the damage done, alongside the hole that did the damage(before the council fill it in) & a receipt for repair/replacement with a letter, not e-mail, to the council.

We tried to claim from Lancashire for a damaged bike wheel that hit a pothole. After a very long wait they sent us a massive ream of paper with all the defect reports from the last year, to prove that since nobody had reported the pothole they couldn't be blamed and were not responsible. The very complicated, wordy letter ended more or less with a challenge to us to take them to Court.

The irony was that we were only claiming about £55 for a re-rim and the administration costs must have been more than that.

British roads are becoming as bad as American roads; in Michigan my brother has special insurance for his wheels and tyres.

This is a pretty good defect reporting site that aims to get your report to exactly the right person; it was built by two guys from Preston: http://streetrepairs.co.uk/

Yes you can. Take a photo of the said pothole and time of the day you went through it. Send the lot to the Council with a covering letter and your bill. My son in law did that and got his money back.
Yes go back and photo it,i did a tyre on one of my motor Scooters many years ago coming home from work. The Council were great,i also took photos of a bad clearing up job done by a road contractor near said hole. The contractor actually paid me.It was the fault of Yorkshire Water.

This is the pot hole. The poor road is Walton Road, Thorpe Arch, Wetherby (near the prison).

Thats pretty bad...and you cant really avoid that if the traffic is heavy..

it looks like its 70mm deep at least on the tarmac edge..nasty

I believe the rule is the council must inspect the road every ? months. If a pothole appears between that period then the council is not responsible unless it has been reported.

People need to report large potholes instead of whining about them. The council can't be expected to know about all potholes as some seem to appear over night.
