I wouldn't havve gone on a CC ride if my husband hadn't come with me. I wasn't confident I could go fast enough and I wanted some company in case I was abandoned!

It turned out to be a highlight of 2011, one of our best days out. I was really nervous though, perhaps men don't get that worried. I'd love to join a club, don't think I'll be quick enough though.

There's the problem with the thought processes of many new cyclists and especially women but not exclusively so. It is also a problem with many clubs who do not provide easier paced rides. Maybe this is where the CC rides come in, no one gets dropped, it is purely a social ride. If I advertised my forum ride as 60 miles, hilly terrain, ave speed 17-18mph, I would be riding alone and quite rightly so.
I would say to anyone who is contemplating a forum ride, do it and don't be put off by "forum reputations", men always like to think they are faster than they are, I think the unofficial term is "willy waving".

I was very glad she didn't - he was my 'first-aider'! And Ruth was nowhere near the slowest anyway - that was me on my hybrid (although in my defence I had just done a Friday night ride 24 hours before). I hope we can all get together again this year - it was fun wasn't it.
I forgot about that nasty gash TMN. It was good fun, we ll have to give Pete a little nudge.

I was glad I took him so we could both enthuse about the day! Pete isn't going to organise another ride this year, he's committed himself elsewhere (audax I think). If I can I'll put my head together with Nick and organise something in the summer.

Don't know how to get over the hurdle of being intimidated by lots of men and not enough women!

No it wasn't. You are forgetting MacB !

A bit further west perhaps ? ^_^
Wot and make me ride silly LD type distances to get to it  ? The only down-side to going further west is increased distance and travel time from that London.

Seriously Ruth - go for it. As suggested elsewhere, having the ride "fronted" by a female could certainly help to even out the gender balance.

I wouldn't want to deprive you of your warm up ride!

To give an idea of what I mean by slow - the average speed of Sunday's 67 mile forum ride (including stops) was 8.6 mph. The average speed while actually moving was 11 mph. (That was my speed, and potsy stayed back with me, so his too. The rest of the group went their separate ways on the ride back, as agreed.)
