A mate of mine was driving his Volvo when there was a smell of burning, and smoke started to fill the driver's footwell.

A few weeks before he had stuffed a McDonald's bag under the seat and forgotten about it.

On the day in question he had just turned on the seat heating.

I was pootling around in my mum's old Beetle when my friend in the back seat suddenly said the seat was getting hot. I pulled over and he got out just as a small hole appeared in the seat material. Fortunately I had a bottle of water in the car and we put it out before it could do too much damage. Apparently it was a known bug - the battery lived under the back seat, and if you were unlucky, sooner or later one of the springs in the worn out back seat would cause a short, and all that comfy padding...well, it was a disaster waiting to happen. And like I say, apparently it quite often did.
