I'm not surprised you didn't get in a bike in Weymouth. There is too much to do and see. My wife comes from Weymouth and has never ridden a bike in her life.!

I love it too, always had summer holidays there growing up . I met my wife there and got married in Holly Trinity which is the church facing the harbour bridge. So whenever I go down there I park outside the inlaws and WALK everywhere
You never mentioned Bovington Camp!
You must have gone through Wool. In 1982, I stepped off of a train there as a fresh faced 16 year old to join the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Armoured Corp. We travelled the 1 mile or so the barracks, just opposite the Tank Musuem, in a rather nice bus. The nice Sgt who met us asked us all our names, if we had had a nice journey, one of the Corporals took my bag and placed it carefully on the truck.

Then we got inside the barracks, around the back of the gym on the parade square and another nice Sgt asked my name "It's Maggot" I said, "Yours?" "F**king Sgt to you you little prick, now get your f**king bag, get in that f**king line, and don't f**king speak until you are spoken to" I must say, it rather opened my eyes to how the next 2 years or so were going to be

Actually, the next couple of years were spent going into Weymouth mostly, I really like it there, it has many many fond memories..... the roller discos and the Radio 1 roadshow are two particular highlights! So was Veronica.....oh those heady (;)) days on Weymouth beach. A couple of lowlights as well, picked up by the Navy Police for :boxing: with some sailors, three days in the Guardhouse for that. Is the bloke making the sand sculptures still there, he was a bloody sandtastic genius!

It was also the first place I got properly drunk, the first place I had a bit of outdoors :smooch: , and the first place I paid for a bed and breakfast on my own, well not on my own as it was also the first place I had a :smooch: in a B&B!

A lot of firsts for me in Weymouth, I am glad it still holds the appeal ^_^
I worked with the Army for a while, and we had a young man who called my colleague "mate"

He smiled, leaned over and said:

"How nice of you to consider me your "mate". I think I Might even let you use my first name if you like.."
"Young lad then foolishy missed the signas and asked what his name was...
The reply ........ "STAFF!"

"STAFF - As in STAFF SERGEANT"

The next five minutes were not a pleasent experience for the young man

I live just outside Dorchester and it is really interesting to hear some positive views on the area rather than the usual moaning in the local paper. Sometimes, I forget just how lucky I am to live here. My 20 mile commute this morning (I work as a civil servant for the MOD at Lulworth camp) took me through Dorchester, past the Roman town house, the Tutankhamun museum, the teddy bear museum, the county museum, Thomas Hardys house, views of the Hardy momument, Britains only thatched castle, the last resting place of Lawrence of Arabia, a cheese factory, follies, hidden WW2 pill boxes, Durdle door, Lulworth Cove and views of Weymouth and Portland (and more besides).
The mackerel will be here soon, so we will be having a few fishing trips down to Chesil and BBQs on the beach. This weekend we are doing a bit of crabbing on Weymouth harbour with chips and beer for lunch.

I've lived in Weymouth all my life, love it here. In the past couple of years they have invested loads in the cycle network. I can now ride from my house to portend (12 miles) completely on cycle paths and only have to cross one road. It's a great place to bring your kids up.

Memories of diving off the end of the pier when I was 12, it was longer then. If I remember rightly there was a bloke that used to do a bit of a diving show off of there as well. My parents used to love to watch me dive of things like that and the bridges over the Thames, they always told me I was an unwanted child.
