Thank you. My problem is being too educated, and having to hold down a responsible job.

Did you ever see that episode of Holby City where the alcholic surgeon collapsed, and then they had to operate on him, and he gave directions from the bed next to his patient? ;)

Oh god...must be bad if you are watching Holby City..

Has anyone else ever been before? I'm thinking about going again.
For the uninitiated:

-you wake up with a hangover - and decide it's too much
-you ring up AA and talk to a scottish
-they direct you to a local meeting

...ah, the promise of the 'meeting'. You think it's going to be full of Ally McBeal types, and maybe with a spattering of Alex Kingston, from ER. Who will snuggle up to and whispher 'what were you were worried about? You've made the first step. Let us go to the pub and celebrate and then have gang sex afterwards'.

The reality is a lot of shabbily dressed men with a *shoot load* of stories about sleeping in skips and hedges.

You mouth a non-denominational prayer, avoid the nutters asking if you want to go for a cup of coffee after, and then go home and sink a bottle of wine, to help forget about the whole sorry affair.
I only went twice for the very reasons you mention Abs, get yourself to the nhs quack and get some 121 therapy/meds it worked for me

heh, if I went to my GP with my head hanging off, he'd prescribe me paracetemol.

The booze is a mental thing. Unless you are physically addicted.

The reason for AA is that we're not as clever as we think we are.

My prob was binge drinking, not a daily addiction to booze, most services are directed at addiction so the likes of AA were never going to work for me. luckily my gp understood this and got me onto a weekly session with a counsellor

I binge drink every day. I think it is beyond my control i.e. don't trust it.

So your self medicating(drinking) ask yourself why, work pressure? personal problems? is it a easy escape route?

Abs, you have admitted to having a problem, that means you understand that it is a issue you need/want to change. You hold the cards, only you can decide ultimately whether you want to? plenty of people here with ears to listen/offer advice and take the piss.

Lots of people have different ways of telling whether you are an alcoholic or not.
I think that, in the same way that a lot of people drink lager or cider to quench their thirst, if you actually drink whisky to quench your thirst, that's when you should probably be telling yourself your'e an alcy.

Bob Dylan reckoned an alcoholic is someone you don't like who drinks as much as you do. For me ... I drink because I enjoy it, and I enjoy getting drunk occasionally. If I ever start using alcohol (or any other drug) as a crutch to blot out problems in other areas of my life, I'll know I've got a problem.
Good luck Abs, whatever you decide to do.
