Its amazing how many abandoned bikes I see in London ,all over the place , tethered to railings etc , I walked by Richmond Station earlier , I counted 9 , usually not expensive ones , bit mad really ,

How do you know they are abandoned? Missing parts?

Bits missing , rusting chains , all the hallmarks of abandonment , if they were in a less used public place id reckon theyed be well vandalised ,

I guess they have little value, people move around a lot, a bit gets stolen and the value of the bike negates repair or replacement

Disposable society

I was amazed last week right in the centre of Bournemouth there were 2 sets of bike hoops within 100 metres of each other and both must have had 3 or 4 bikes in with severe issues that made me think they were abandoned

If there were loads of abandoned bikes round near me I'd start having daydreams of liberating them & using any salvageable parts to cobble together a working bike or two.

Knowing me though I'd never get round to cobbling the bits together; I'd just end up with a flat full of salvaged bikes.

I'd say a flat full of gaspipe and BSO frames and no wheels at all, at a guess
