This is Bliss Tweed Mill in Chipping Norton, it was abandoned for years until it was turned into yuppie flats. While it was still derelict I sneaked over the fence and took loads of atmospheric black and white photos (when there were only film cameras), they turned out really well and it was great to have some images of the mill before it was gentrified, unfortunately I've lost them, sigh...

That is a big shame - you could have printed them, framed them and sold them to the inhabiting yuppies for a small fortune. They probably would do a bomb in that posh cafe bookshop (if still open) near the theatre. Or in the theatre gifte shoppe. It is a fab building, I walked that way when I was working at the Theatre once.

Here's the Great Northern Railway's bonded warehouse in Derby, part of a disused railway between Burton and Nottingham. The part between Mickleover and Egginton was used by BR Research, and is now a cycle path.

[QUOTE 3398867, member: 9609"]I would love to get my hands on it too, but these places never come on the market, and even if it did I guess you would need very deep pockets, for starters you would need to construct over a mile of road up a hill, then bring the services in, so that could be the best part of a million before you start.

Its "Fatlips Castle" goolemap just outside Hawick. WikiLink I just love how it gets its name "The castle is said to have obtained its unusual name from the habit of the members of the house to greet guests with less discretion than was considered decent at the time" I wonder if that entitlement would come in the deeds, "owner is entitled to smack anyone in the mouth who has dared to chap on his four inch thick studded oak door" ^_^

Anyway it has recently had a lot of money spent on it by Historic Scotland, I don't think there is any interior to it, but it is now wind and water tight, which is good as it should stop it deteriorating. Below are a couple of pictures from this summer,

A rich fool attempted to renovate something similar on Grand Designs. I think they spent the better part of £2million and it was nowhere near complete.

Detroit is in a really bad way. There quite a few photos of its abandoned builings about. What is so poignant and un-nerving about a lot of them is that there is still quite a lot of the contents in some of them, rather like The Marie Celeste.

Here's a tiny sample...

Detroit has been in a bad way since the failure of Guardian Bank, during the depression. They have a beautiful building, still occupied, but by others. Edsel Ford and some of his friends were involved in the bank, and Henry Ford bailed out Edsels' holdings, but not the bank itself, leading to much of Detroit being rather gappy in its development.

There is some hope for Detroit now though it has fallen a very long way, There is a start of some sort of community farming in the abandoned areas and a bit of regeneration with arty type stuff in some of the abandoned buildings, good to see the theatre on that site has been saved.

Seeing what happened there does make me wonder what Dubai will be like in another 50 years. 'The World' has had a troubled start.

I love derelict...this old farm building, probably housing for farmworkers god knows how long ago is on my route to work. It intrigues me, I want to get some low light, misty, foggy photos of it before it collapses...(I think I used these before in a different post)

Not far from Reiver's castle is the Monteath Mausoleum at Lilliardsedge.
