Ok just found it on Sheldon Browns site ,left and right hand indicator rods should be butted up tight to each other and adjusted when on the bike in 2nd gear with the left indicator rod adjusted level with the end of the left axle

Be careful not to overtighten the two rod halves into each other. The thread is very fine and replacements can be hard to source now.

Cable tension in super-low gear (1) will be very high.

thanks for the info i set it up yesterday and agree with everything you said particularly the high cable tension in bottom gear it was really fiddly to set up not helped by a weak spring in the trigger mechanism witch kept making 1st grear jump to 2nd but think I've sorted it out now
