Get another quote. You don't specify what car you have but there are re-conditioned gearboxes and engines available which are far cheaper to fit than new ones. Your garage should have offered you this option. If the rest of the car is fine why scrap it.
Thats akin to topping someone because they've got a boil on their arse.
Make enquiries, you could probably buy a second hand gearbox on ebay even.

Agree with David, try Breakeryard or Breakerlink used both in the past, would recommend, then have a ring round for local mechanics and get some quotes for removal and fitting - you might be surprised

pity you are not in hertfordshire. Stephensons in ware are the mutts nuts when it comes to auto boxes. A friend beemer box went kaput and dealer wanted nearly £5k to fix it. I towed it to them and they sorted it for less than £800 . well worth ringing around.

that said if you do want to scrap it you will need to use an approved dismantler wgho will issue a certificate of destruction to you and DVLA. this stops you getting any tickets for a car that got repaired but not reregistered.

Hmm if the rest of the car is OK why niot pop it in the autotrader as spares/repair. you will be surprised how many get bought that way for not bad money.

is it worth taking the good parts of it and selling them off first then take it to scrappy .

or leave it open with keys in hoping somebody nicks it then claiming on insurance !!

I tried that once with an early Skoda Estelle. It was still there a week later.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Its an old P reg Micra Auto that Mrs BG refused to drive after she forgot which pedal did what...probably the best decision she ever made
The mechanic in the Nissan dealers is a friend so if it was economically repairable (I hope) he'd have said so. I get all my parts trade from him and he services and MOTs it anyway. I did a quick google and once you add a torque converter to the price of the box plus the labour for fitting, I could pick up a similar used Micra for less.

In any event I'm retired and reckon I could manage without a car. At least it's worth a try. Insurance is very high round Merseyside and mine wont fit in the garage cos of all the bikes...

The bikes and the bus pass cover most of my journeys and Merseyrail are good about bring them on the train even at peak times Might even get and electric one for heavy lift shopping when my ME symptoms are bad although it's be a major dent in my pride.

Trouble with with all this logic is that in my heart I really want a 50's Landrover and Ariel Square 4 with a sidecar...oh and a 1943 Rudge Whitworth and and and...

I gave my car to charity. They sorted out everything from organising pick-up to sorting out a dealer. The money went to shelter so I did my bit to help someone. These are the people I gave it to, and it was free. http://www.giveacar.co.uk/

pack it with a mixture of ammonium nitrate and aluminium fillings, pour on a little petrol, stick in a magnesium ribbon fuse, light it, and run like buggery.
