Tried to make the subject as clear as possible. Sometime between now and winter I think I'm going to fulfil my next N+1 with a bike that I can do assorted local trails and cross country rides on and have as the absolute lousy weather commuter.

With that in mind I've been considering going for a hard tail MTB, I don't want a CX and the Sirrus already does everything I'd want for generic winter commuting. I'm comfortable with the idea of building on what I initially get by trading up shifters, mechs, etc. so I figure I need to make sure that the frame is as good as it can be. Biggest hitch, as this is well down the food chain of the bike garage, I'm looking at capping my budget at £400. Hence second hand.

The aim is for the bike to do 20-30 mile off road trail rides, which would include up and down the North Downs as they are on my doorstep pretty much. Then, when the slush and ice starts to make an appearance being the commuter bike so I've got something a bit more slideable than the Sirrus on 28C's (more like 26C's).

What brands/models to look out for with my ebay searches? If I could find another Mongoose Amasa I'd probably be happy to be honest :-) , but then I do know pretty much nothing about this stuff.

Decathlon Rockriders seem decent enough

No idea if it's the right thing, but I've ended up with a Commencal El Camino. Spec seems OK and Kai likes the Absolut they have so we'll see. It's the 2014 model, was within budget and is very orange...
