I would go hybrid...and despite the bad reputation of the Halfords service, the Boardmans are good bikes with good reputations. The Boardman Comp is a hybrid with straight handlebars but set with road characteristics (according to the blurbs), it has for example thin road wheels so is fast but gives you the more relaxed upright riding position.....I think the Genesis Day is of a similar ilk.
Whatever you get avoid front suspension, the extra weight outweighs the benefit. You can always get seatpost suspension or a sprung saddle.
