I'm in a situation where I have too little garage to cope with my recently added to stable of bikes. Unfortunately, this means one will have to go.

Has anyone got any advice on the best way to sell? EBay/Gumtree/post office window? How do you work out a fair price?

Any help appreciated.

This forum has a for sale section when you have been a member for a period of time, which is pretty reasonable imho.

The problem with selling a bike is that there is often a difference between what the owner wants and what buyers are willing to pay. I know this from my own bitter experience.
This time of year is not a great time to sell a bike, you will have more success in spring.

If you want a quick sale Gumtree would be my suggestion, just because Ebay is rubbish .. but you would need to be aggressively priced

Have a look on e-bay bike radar for sale section of this site and get an idea of what similar bikes are selling for. Price it competitively be honest about any damage and take as many pictures of the bike and any damage if relevant. Give it a clean and grease (if needed) and be prepared for people to send you insulting offers and say it's over priced etc etc. Not the best time of year to sell IMO but then if someone wants what you got then your in luck. E-Bay charge 10% final fee and now 10% on postage cost so wort remembering. I've had most success on Bike Radar personally. I try and avoid Gumtree as your competing with the thieves prices which isn't easy. @biggs682 sells a lot of bikes his ads are all ways good and honest maybe he has some better advice. GLWS

Sell on eBay and loss 15% of the value, I had that to the sale item and wait.

Thanks for all your advice.

It looks like hanging on until spring is the best way forward. Maybe I've approached the problem all wrong and should look to sell the car.

When i started cycling i was told it is illegal to sell a bike, is this not true, does the devil not take you to the fiery depths of hell if one leaves the shed and is taken away by another....

What he said ;)

Also as cycling is getting more and more popular iv found that Facebook is also a great way of selling. There are a number of for sale pages or swap shop pages that you can sell stuff using Facebook. Everyone's on it, and yes if you wait till spring everyone will be getting the cycling bug again and your bikes will go. Just be honest with your selling pitch also !

I agree ebay is useless these days

This is where a good relationship with a good LBS can come in very handy*. They could sell it for you on commission, or give you a good price in exchange for a wheelset/jacket/shoes/new brakes .....whatever.

*I have discovered that any savings made online are cancelled out when it comes to buying a new bike from a shop that knows me well. My last trade-in resulted in my getting £600 for a 2.5 year old £1000 bike (it was immaculate) against a new £1000 (list price) bike. This is double what I could realistically get in the market place. My total spend probably beat any discount I could have found online and it was so much less hassle..
