Hi all, I'm looking at getting clipless pedals for my cube peloton, as currently using flats.
I've been given £50 halfords vouchers from work so thought I would use it for pedals and shoes(will chip in more for the shoes)
Would like the double sided pedals to make it easier and so I can have recessed cleats so I can walk around easier.
Any suggestions guys?
Thanks

Shimano M520 pedals are perfectly acceptable (I have them on 2 bikes) and they are only about £18 at Halfords so you would have £32 left to put towards some SPD shoes.

Set the release tensions to minimum (ON BOTH SIDES OF BOTH PEDALS!) to minimise the chances of unclipping problems. You could tighten them up later once you get used to the unclipping action, but I always leave mine set to minimum and never accidentally unclip.

Thanks both , the m520 seems decent option so I will get them.

Can I ask are they easy to fit? I'm learning re bike maintenance as I go .

They are extremely easy to fit. I use a proper pedal spanner but you can get away with using an adjustable spanner if it fits, or the right size Allen key. I would buy the right tool for the job (£8.99 at Halfords)!

The vital fact that you need to know is that the right and left pedals have opposite thread directions! The pedals are marked with L and R so you know which is which. The R pedal thread tightens clockwise (the normal direction) and the L pedal anticlockwise. (The reason for that oddity is to prevent the left pedal undoing itself as you ride along!)

hello sniffer

have a look at planet x for the joosworth pedal spanner, I think they are about 2.99 each but you will have to pay postage. I bought one a while ago and its worth its weight so to speak. it will leave you more money for the shoes at the orange coloured shop.

the pedals are easy to remover and refit, just remember that you undo the pedals to the rear of the bike on both sides - so if you are standing to the rear of the bike and the spanner is in the 12 oclock position, you pull it back towards you.

I am sure someone else will explain a little better than me but hopefully you get the gist.

Put some copper slip on the threads before you insert them your be surprised how tight they get after not so long. Buy a decent pedal spanner not one made of chocolate personally I use a Park tool, I tried the cheaper ones they were frankly all **** when it came to a stuck pedal. Oh and be careful not to cross thread them they should just screw in, any resistance and your cross threading them.

Thanks , seems straightforward to do, but no doubt I will have a few moments when cycling with the pedals
