I have a new Whyte 901 hardtail the geometry of which means that for any given size you are running a lot of seat post. However I am at the "minimum insertion" line and would still like another 10mm.
Would getting a longer post help here as I could then run a bit more whilsthaving enough in the seat tube or would it become a risk in itself to run to much? The bike is pretty much for trail use so will be getting battered about. I am running 25cm of exposed post at the mo.

Should be fine, the only risk i can think of is that the longer seatpost might flex more. As long as you have plenty in the frame itself I can't see a problem.

Would a larger frame not be a better fit though?

Frame and reach etc are all fine, I'm well within the size guide for all my bikes.I always run a fair bit of seat post on my bikes, I run close to maximum on the Montpellier, also a Whyte bike and the Specialized Roubaix.maybe I'm a strangely proportioned man.

Better to run a longer post than one that's on the limits. Reduces stress on the frame.

Get a dropper post - there is always loads inside the frame - maybe a 150mm dropper for you !

I had a custom seatpost made for my Saracen Blitz that is 600mm long (the bike is a 'jump' bike and only made in one size)

It cost £50 to get a length of seamless Aluminium tubing turned down to the correct size and the fitting from the top of the original seatpost removed ( it was turned off to the internal size of the new tube) and welded into the top of the new one.
