My wife and I took 6 months off to go tyravelling in 2010. We both applied to our employers for unpaid leave and were both lucky enough to get it, and it was very reassuring knowing that we had jobs to come back to. In terms of practical stuff:

1. We sold our car.
2. Arranged "empty house" insurance and took valuables to friends and family for safekeeping.
3. Left the central heating on at 12 degrees to avoid burst pipes (condition of insurance).
4. Arranged for a relative to look in once a week, collect & open post, etc.
5. Arranged travel insurance. We upgraded the cover for "extreme sports" (we went diving and sky-diving, which are often excluded).

Looking through my list, none of it applies as your partner is staying at home and will still be working. So go for it and don't worry about a thing! Oh, and make sure you buy your partner a damned good present...

Aye, thanks for that. I asked the HR manager at work today if there was any chance of the company having a career break or sabbatical-type policy but we absolutely do not so I'll have to leave for good and if/when I want to go back then I'll have to hawk my talents around again! And I've been thinking of buying my wife a damned good present. A new vacuum cleaner or a Toblerone, something like that!

Don't let "work" stop you, if you've got this far then the break/trip will always be on your mind. Leaving work, job, career, whatever that is the hardest step, once done though you'll be relieved and a little while later, wonder why on earth you were worried about taking that step.

The vacumn cleaner is a better present, she'll remember the gift for much longer, however, ironing board covers are much cheaper.
