I am assuming you mean pointy helmets. Yes, they make a big difference, especially so if they fit your position, only really of use if you can sit in an aero position for long durations because they will catch a lot more wind if you look around a lot. But unless you are racing a time trial, triathlon bike leg or certain track disciplines, don't even think about wearing one!

Just been looking at some images from a local time trial event and the vast majority seem to be wearing them but how much difference are we talking? Minutes, seconds, or just marginal gains? If it's minutes then I can see why but I can't see it personally.

p.s. Saw one guy just wearing a wooly hat. I hope he won!

[EDIT] I do not condone the act of not wearing a helmet whilst cycling. Just thought I'd add that one in there.

At 30mph, around 70 seconds for a 25 mile TT, which is a LOT. Less time saved when riding slower, but still substantial.
