Be careful with that Maz, you could be driving grit into the freehub. Better to try to get that cassette off, remove the freehub and clean everything up before drenching it with light oil.

Now I think about it I reckon water could have been the problem. When you turn the pedals backwards, does the hub rotate freely or does it drag and the chain sag on its top run?
Thanks for this. I take your point about pushing grit into the freehub.
w.r.t. turning the pedals backwards - at the moment everything is behaving itself so there's no chain sag on the top run.

The traditional method of unfreezing old school freewheels on the road .... I don't know if it works with freehubs.

**** on them.

:-)

I managed to free one using the heater of the car for a few mins so I can believe warm liquid works. We'd driven 45 mins to do some Mountain Biking with the bikes on top. We think the cause was a bike wash the night before, so water was in the freehub. It was fine whilst riding in sub zero temperatures for the next couple of hours.
