Couple of hundred yards from work on Friday and the chain started crunching every few rotations. Nursed the bike to work, chain was a bit slack so tensioned it and rode around the carpark - felt ok. Rode 12miles home Friday night and could feel something not quite right every 3rd stroke - maybe a stiff link. Got the bike out to clean it yesterday and to check the chain and, ah, one of the inner plates had snapped in half - through the middle, not at a pin.

I've been using KMC S1 for sometime, £4 a go and I get about 2,500miles from one before they stretch to buggery. Thinking about getting some Z510 HX once I've used the last S1.

I remember that happening to me back in the 60's; eighth inch chain on my SS.

(As a kid, I never did service it properly.)

£4? Blimey.
Yep, CRC usually have them at between £4 - £5 (currently £3.99). So my thinking has been I can get about 7,500miles from three S1. Would I get 7,500miles from a £12 chain? Probably not - so it's more of a question of how reliable they are and until Friday I've found S1 to be fine.
