Ahead steerer adjustment on '07 Spesh Hardrock

I've got a small amount of play in the ahead steerer on my Hardrock, however I can't seem to tighten this out, all I do is make the steering stiffer & have a grainy feel to the movement. Anyone know what do to about this? I'm a little confused as the same thing worked fine on my Marin.

Are you sure that the top cap is not bottoming out against the top of the steerer?

It should be tightening up against the stem(if that is above the spacers) so as a quick test loosen and then raise the stem slightly from its present position and then tighten it up. Then tighten the top cap and see if the play has now disappeared.

If this is the case all you need is another spacer installing.

That was my first thought, but no I've got about 6mm of space left.
