I have a sense of deja-vu here...

Glad it's not the States - can you imagine what the airport line for immigration control would be like? They are ultra-paranoid at the moment - if the world and his mate was descending on them, US Border Control would be even more horrendous than now. I can see it now - entire Olympic teams from nations where the skin colour is less than white, where the men have beards and have names that suggest they may not be Christians would end up being refused entry... As much as I adore my Stateside friends from various groups I inhabit, I have absolutely no desire to travel to the US in no small part due to the paranoia at the US border. I think it was odds on that Rio would get it, as the Games have not been held in South America before.

I liked FF's first posting saying it was going there in 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

late night brain fade I'm afraid ;)

I think it's great for S.America, a continent that has a passion for sport. A chance for Rio to haul itself up by its bootsraps. It should provide a stunning backdrop. Hope Lula can keep the corruption at bay over the next few years.

I have some sympathy for Chicago though, although it's the USA it's one of my favourite places ever visited I'm certain they'll have done a great job.
But Rio was the inspired choice.
Apparently the London 2012 team played a part in building Rio's bid.

I might have to go and pay the lovely Luiza a visit while I'm there.

The lovely Luiza would look quite ordinary in Rio, believe me...

I think it's good that the IOC have given the games to a city in the global south, but my big concern about the Olympics is what it will do to the poor areas of the city (in particular the favelas) where I spent time earlier this year. I am absolutely certain there will be massive 'security' operations that will basically involve repressing the poor in various ways... the current city administration is not a progressive one at all.
