Looking good for LHR->DXB

I hate long haul travel.

I've come to Australia to help tie up my parents' estate. Just 2 hours in DXB, I presumably brushed past someone who was sick. Now I have influenza. Which is sort of good news, as almost every transmittable disease I know starts with "flu like symptoms" eg zika, meningitis, Weils disease, lyme disease etc etc. Now in voluntary quarantine, and too f*cked up to do any of the tasks I need to do.

And I currently have two book dealers coming to the house - one who is well over sixty because I met him, and the other is recovering from knee surgery. Obviously can't expose either of them to my illness, so trying to work out which of my friends might be brave enough to act as my proxy.

Hope you're feeling better soon. Sorry to hear of the reasons behind the travelling.

Going to go anywhere on a bike, exploring?
Probably not by bike. I did some walking this afternoon, though, and saw a few things. Also confirmed what someone told me, which is that Geneva is EXPENSIVE. My flight leaves Monday evening, so I have 2 days here.

Now I have influenza
Looks like I dodged a bullet there. I got really sick about 1pm on Saturday - I sat down in a coffee shop and ordered an iced latte whenI thought I had a cold. By the time I had finished my drink, I called the waitress over and told her to treat everything at my table as a biohazard, paid by tapping my card and went straight to find a doctor. A nasty afternoon where I was so sick that I went to a supermarket to buy a couple of ready meals and a few other things, and got home to realise I'd left the readymeals at the till. <skipping a bit> woke up Sunday morning feeling much better. I think I am well on the way to recovery. So pretty well less than 24 hours "really sick". And in the case "really sick" means not able to shop efficiently. I was never at deaths door.

And a friend is coming tomorrow to talk to book dealer so I don't have to risk infecting him.

A perfect life for someone with mild agoraphobia  Which, btw, I don't have. I think I have something, but it's not agoraphobia.

ps Australians are insane about coffee. This is what I got when I ordered an iced latte ...

I described to the waitress as "a craft project"

I'm sitting on the jetty at Ivoire (in France), waiting for the return ferry back to Geneva. When I booked the day ferry cruise this morning, I didn't realise the 2 hour ferry trip to Ivoire actually crossed a national border.
Good thing I had both currencies with me.

I had a London colleague who went to Melbourne a few years ago. We were discussing different aspects of his trip and then he stopped and said "is it possible I've never had a good cup of coffee before?" Me and the other person who had been to Melbourne said "yes". We also agreed with his realisation that he had never actually eaten chinese food before.

My best coffees have been in Melbourne and Rome. London is catching up. Once they get coffee right, they will act like they invented it. Like - from a recent thread - "The Office" was ground breaking, because no UK TV series had copied that format yet.

A few years ago we stayed in Luxembourg. Our satnav had us crossing the Moselle several times on the way from Germany. We found out we were staying a few kilometres from a town called Schengen which is at the point were Luxembourg, Germany and France touched. It was a lovely place to stay - and I celebrated my birthday by cycling in 3 countries before breakfast. But with border controls on every bridge, it would have been hell to live there. I always thought that Schengen Agreement was a good idea, but after visiting the village, so much more so.

Schengen is the borderless realm of a lot of mainland Europe. It's the reason you can pass between Italy and Germany (for example) without showing your papers)

Hope it's just the travelling and the reason behind it.

I have a question: what do you do when hotel checkout is about 10am, but you don't need to get to the airport until about 6:30pm?
