I was about to book flights with Flybe for four of us to go to Edinburgh in January, only at the end do you find out they want to charge £36 for using a standard debit card and more if a credit card.

The only one they don't charge for is a Visa Electron which is a basic card designed mainly for people on benefits, who are obviously the least likely to be flying anywhere.

Apparrently, they're quite hard to get hold of these days but I've just applied for one from the Halifax so hopefully will be able to bypass this rip off.

This is one of the last remaining bastions of 'Electron' supply, see also this for some charge avoiding tips : http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/beat-budget-airline-charges#penny

Barnet,
Most Airlines are now saying that there will be no charge for using debit cards to pay, but I got charged £25 for booking a flight with Monarch Airlines a few weeks back. Surely this just a money making racket, the cost of processing the bill cannot be that much, even with the bank charge levied to the airline??

Ryanair brings it one step further from November - use their card or else pay charges...
http://conversation.which.co.uk/transport-travel/ryanair-cash-passport-ryanair-fees-and-surcharges/

minimum transfer of 150 quid onto the card
2.50 monthly fee charged if no transactions on the card in 6 months.
Agree to Ryanairs terms and conditions which could change..

Still even with the 12quid / person round trip extra normally they work out cheaper and air travel is still "for nothing" in comparison to what it was. I admit security and baggage limitations make it not as nice as it was - and combine that with rip - offs for food at airports and parking charges etc.. but hey relax..look at the overall package and try and rationalise that way.
