We have a burglar alarm on our house. My theory is that a potential burglar will target the houses on our road which don't have alarms.

I had an alarm once, it was called a dog. A lovely German Shepherd Dog who would bark at things she thought was suspicious, she didn't do it that often which made me pay more attention when she did. And on the plus side if somebody had got in she would of had them. Lost her a few years ago when her hips/spine went. Still got the "Beware of the dog" sign though.

Our Scout Hut used to get burgled regularly, so one of the parents worked for an alarm company, and they fitted one for us

In the first two weeks of the Summer break there were 6 attempts and each time the alarm worked.

Then we had a letter of complaint to the Council from the house that overlooks the HQ that the alarm kept on going off!

Final insult was when we had an attempt one evening and he stormed across whilst we were talking to the Police

There was a rant about the alarm going off, however he was even less than impressed by the Police!

After taking a statement - the PC pointed out that had he phoned them or actually taken some action when he had seen them climbing the fence and forcing the door, then the alarm would not have gone off - so the answer was entirely in his hands!

I answered the poll before reading the thread thinking it was about car alarms:rolleyes:
No one has a house alarm around here, but I would certainly investigate if I suspected housebreaking in the neighbourhood.

I used to look out every time I heard either a house or car alarm. Then the guy over the road took to running his girlfriend home at 11pm most nights. It would go off every few minutes until he returned at 11.30pm. Without fail his house alarm went off as his car left the street. As I go to bed early, I'm on the way now, it woke me every damn time. I stayed up one night to have words with him about setting the alarm correctly and as I heard his car door open another neighbour had him pinned against the car demanding he wait as his alarm... etc. etc. etc. Sure enough it went off and after that he set the alarm carefully because we had no more false alarms. I rather think the intervening neighbour used threatening words to this clown. Since then I've never bothered to look out.
