Probably shouldn't admit to this (hope the bosses aren't reading) but once a year the cyclists at work arrange an afternoon out cycling with a few "water stops" which basically consists of an afternoon booked off as annual leave and a 20 mile ride home which, broken down, goes something like this...

10 min riding ... 1 hr in pub.
15 min riding .... 1 hr in next pub
10 min riding... 1 hour in next pub

etc etc...

until we arrive home at about 10pm at night... riding like this...

absolutely bladdered

(a lot of it is cycle and tow paths though)

It is probably not a good idea, but then again we have all done it at sometime.

Curiously enough drunk cyclists are at the bottom of the league in the road accident statistics, may have something to do with the amount you can drink and still cycle, as opposed to walking or driving. Lets face it if you to drunk to stand, you can still sit in a car...

It is an offence to cycle while incapacitated through drink. The drink-drive laws for motorists don't apply though (there's no breathalysing, no mandated max blood alcohol level, no chance of points) - it's a purely subjective thingy on the part of the cop who stops you.

I might have a couple of pints (maybe three over a few hours) and cycle home afterwards, but wouldn't want to ride hard or go a long distance after much beer, it's a performance killer

i know people who have received points on their license as a result of being drunk on a bike.

i don't agree with it

Never heard of that before. ;)

I was stopped p*ssed up on my bike by the police many moons ago. Weaving around in a bus lane at night with no lights. I was given a sharp talking to, a bit of banter and made to walk it home. Nothing was mentioned about my driving licence.

It's just such hard work if you've had a drink though.

I had to nip down to the shops last night and thought I'd use the bike - I admit I'd had a glass of ale, sweating like a race horse by the time I got home!!

I partially remember cycling home from the Fairport Convention reunion many years ago after quite a skinful - I have no idea how I did it. I do remember someone saying to his friend, as I manfully struggled up the hill out of Cropredy, "he's no Miguel Indurain" - I'd like to see Big Mig do Le Tour after a few gallons of 6X and a pint of gin and tonic, hah!!

I have riden through the west end of london after having a few. I got home fine but I CERTAINLY WOULDN'T MAKE A HABIT OF IT. I think you can get away with one, no more!!

Maybe it's self limiting. The part of cycling that needs the most balance is starting off. So if you're too p*ssed to ride you can't. This is, of course, an entirely theoretical observation.

You can get points on your licence for motoring offences, which may or may not involve actually driving at the time. So, for example, if you got drunk enough to steal a car and rode your bike to get there ... I know. it's weak.

We were talking about this in the pub, funnily enough, the other day. My mate, who's a copper said you cannot get points on your driving license for being drunk in charge of a cycle. The officer would probably give you a fixed penalty notice.

And if my Auntie had bollocks, she'd be my uncle.

Not many out and out drunk cyclists, but I reckon there's proabably a bit or Darwinianism going on here. Those who regularly go out and ride pissed most likley don't live long enough to comehere and tell the tale
