alcohol stove fuel

Just realising that i have poor knowledege on many subjects and once again need advice

I have bought a very compact and lightweight fuel stove - i am very happy with it 300g inc all pots etc. but would like to know the best fuel and the best means of transporting the fuel

If it's an alcohol stove then meths is the only fuel to use.

In France it's called alcool a bruler and avalable from most supermarkets.

Here it's available from most DIY stores and Wilkinsons. Wilkinsons is about the cheapest source unless you can find a shop that stores it in bulk and will dispense it into your own container - not very common.

If it is indeed as seems likely an alcohol stove (brand?) only use alcohol, and not, I repeat not, petrol, parafin oil or whatever. Alcohol stoves are neat. They are very light, and can burn safely (although the flame can be invisible). They are, however, slow, and use more fuel, so design needs to be optimised. That is precisely what some modern alcohol stoves such as the Clikstand or the Caldera cone do, inspired by the classic Trangia. As for a fuel bottle, Trangia make a good one (don't use the aluminium fuel bottles that you use for petrol).

I was of the same opinion that meths was the only fuel but on other sites they talk about prefering different types like BEEP? i think thats what they called it

any clues?

Heet you mean? That is a US brand name of fuel line de-icer -effectively alcohol. Over there, it is the easierst way to get alcohol

Trangia do a specific fuel bottle which is robust and very proactical. Meths has a very low viscosity and seaps past any leaky bottle tops to make a smelly mess in your kit.
Their fuel bottle has a good O ring seal and a neat pourer ont he top.

The ONLY way to transport meths on a bike is NOT with the rest of your kit.

Many touring bikes have a 3rd bottle cage mounted on the underside of the downtube for this very purpose

If you don't have one, you can get one that is mounts using a belt and buckle or jubilee clip type of mounting

The same applies to other liquid fuels as well. They all smell: parafin oil is much worse. I too have my fuel bottle under the down tube. I have just ordered a Bikebuddy mk3 cage for that: I wanted more versalitility in bottle size than a normal cage can offer. Also, since the bottle is hanging, I wanted it more secure than can be achieved with a normal bottle cage.

I don't remember, but it is probably a matter of oxidation. They say so explicitly, however.

i'll look into the holders and I agree its got to be a good idea to keep it seperated from everything else

Alcohol will corrode an aluminium bottle, and it will leak in due course

I had one of these MSR for a bit and it was grate even sea kayaking it never let me down.
