I've installed an enhancement that should mark your alerts as read when you view the content.
You can also mark alerts as unread (if you want to go back and check later) by visiting your alerts page.
There's also an option to stop your alerts being marked as read when you view them - scroll down to the bottom of your alert preferences to tick the option.
