I'd like to call ours 'Computer' as in Star-Trek, is it do-able?

Yes, 'computer' is one of the options. Sadly 'HAL' isn't.

I suspect they think that would be too easy to say accidentally and/or too hard to distinguish as a word.

Besides, you got it wrong, its the letter BEFORE, not after, as had it been one letter along from 'IBM', then 'HAL' would have been 'JCN' (possibly 'Jason')

I handle that with presence sensors and automations in Home Assistant. No need to even speak 😂
