Whose bonehead idea was it to replace Arlene Philips with her?
Jay Hunt. And, yes, it was because Arlene Phillips is 66 years old.

And if April74 were to get a sniff of the amount of money that her husband's training company had been paid by the BeeBeeCee he'd have an attack of the vapours.

Great result on sunday though, Martina Hingis may not of been the best of the bunch, but she could dance. Joe Calzagi ,the Welsh version of Herman Munster should of gone. You can trust the viewers to oust the ones with some talent.

Calzaghe was awful. As you say, just like that chap out of the Munsters. And, yes, the viewers voted a much better dancer off.

I still enjoyed it. Len's posture, which puts me in mind of a passage in The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, is the epitome of rectitude. If he were ever to drop his keys, you can be sure that those old knees would bend, just so, and his back would remain completely vertical. Ola's costumes are hilarious, Bruno's theatrics even more so, Craig simpering at the sports correspondent was just peach, but, most of all, it's a wake-up call to those of us who've secretly hankered to be dancers and have never made the effort.

It boils down to this:

Aleisha:
Cons: She has no idea about judging dance competitions
Pros: She's a fox.

Arlene:
Pros: She has stacks of experience of judging dance competitions
Cons: She's not a fox.

Problem is this is television. Arlene didn't stand a chance.

To be fair to Alesha Dixon the Beeb's reasoning I would say there were probably other factors involved. The show the BBC is directly competiting with now on a Saturday night not so long ago drafted in a young pop star of a similarish age to be on the panel. I reckon the beeb will have looked on some parallels with X-factor (I don't watch it). The other thing is that Alesha Dixon has been on various BBC programmes and comes across very, very well on a small one to one basis even on topics that she hadn't got "expertise" about. Blagging ability is pretty important on tv.

Of course there may not be much to be said for that reasoning as small studios pre-recorded stuff with friendly interviewers isn't anything like large live tv studios. Similarly being a pop star on a pop star show as a judge is different to being a pop star and very popular former contestant on a dance show as a judge.

My interest in the show is less than zero, but from a quick glance at the newstands it looks as if the used bog-roll that passes for our tabloid 'news'papers have decided that after one show it's time to destroy a young woman.

F'cking scum.
