In town it's pointless, so many people I'd spend my day riding along without any hands on the handle bar. Out of town I raise my hand as best I can off the handle bars but usually I'm pegging it when I see someone but no one seems to respond.

My guess is that after discounting those who working hard for a PB or are similarly engaged the percentage of standoffish roadies is not greater than the percentage of other cyclists who are somewhat intimidated/envious of the lycra species.

For me receiving and giving an acknowledgment to other riders on the road makes the training more enjoyable. I say hello to joggers, dog walkers and horse riders as well. On the other hand when I get ignored it can be a touch annoying.

On one occasion when I felt particularly grumpy I acknowledged a rider going the other way and was met with an aggressive stare that followed me as we passed. Stupidly I did a U turn , caught him up, overtook him and expecting him to repeat his stare routine gave him one back. Instead he gave me a cheery hello. Felt a bit of a burke and rode on as fast as I could.

I slag roadies off but it's just pulling their chains. In reality they're no more likely to blank you than anyone else. Commuting/main road riders seem to be the worst with POB's seemingly unaware that they are now part of the cycling fraternity and expected to play nice. Out in the country everyone says hello.

IME its doesn't matter whether its a mtb'ker, roadie or other some folk say hi, some folk don't it doesn't seem to matter what bike they're or I'm on. And like Mr Pig say's the friendlyness seems to improve out of town.

I don't expect every stranger to acknowledge my presence.

I'll usually give a nod on the trail, but the roads are wide here and you can miss someone going by. On the more popular routes, if you gave every rider that passed a nod, you'd have whiplash by the time you got home.
