I'm 6' 1" 32" leg and my Giant Defy is a (L) 55.5 cm (C-T) compact and my Raleigh Avanti compact is 55cm (C-T) 58cm using Raleigh sizing (like Specialized). My Avanti came with a 130mm stem my Giant a 110mm stem. I preferred the riding position of the Giant so tried the Raleigh with a 110mm stem which seemed to work better for me. Bits can easily be swapped about to get a good fit. Ebay is a good source for cheap stuff to try things.

I'm just taller than than the OP (5 foot 9.25 Inch, the online sites I'm using says that 176cm  ) but my inseam is closer to 33 inch (using the book between the legs technique) and a bike fit suggested a 56cm for me, but of the bikes I've got they've not been available in that size so I've went for the size below and ride 54cm and 55cm bikes and concentrated on getting the saddle/ reach correct (I think they are more important anyway), as long as the OP's crown jewels are OK I don't think a 56cm will be too big after 6 weeks doctornige will probably know best

I normally ride a 54, my (ageing) Allez compact is a 56.5. It's probably my best fitting bike in terms of comfort over long distances. I did shorten the reach- it originally had a pretty long stem on it.
