A mile of pristine tarmac, closed to motorised traffic, wild flowers to stop and look at, skylarks singing, kestrel hovering, swallows swooping in front of the bike. Could it get any better than that?

how about 2 miles of pristine tarmac, no traffic, 8pm in late Autumn, all togged up in thermals, fresh air on the face, an owl and a pitch black sky FULL TO THE BRIM of amazing stars and ... PLANETS (namely, Jupiter, Venus and red Mars)! that was my ride home for about 2 weeks last year. nearly rode in to the ditch while staring at the sky on most nights.

or the time i was riding home from Meriden about 3 years ago; 2 miles downhill, Autumn, bronze, brown, yelllow, red, orange leaves on trees, smell of bonfires, green fields, sunset swirls of yellow, red and orange and far off city lights like a sprinkling of glitter across the horizon. i had to stop my bike for a couple of minutes just to take in the amazing view over.... Birmingham of all places!
