Hi all - I don't know the routes around Alnwick and I am looking for local knowledge/ advice.

My family of self, hubby and 2 boys (age 9 and 11) are going to Alnwick for a week's holiday, by train. I have just discovered that we can take 4 bikes together on the train if we want! Wow! Hurrah!

Anyway - having been working on the assumption up to now that that would be impossible, I had been thinking about taxis, buses, hire cars etc to get us where we want to go. But I would much rather take the bikes provided we can get around reasonably well.

I am a bit cagey when travelling by bike with the children - they are excellent cyclists for their age both on and off road as far as control of the bike goes, but I don't especially want to expose them to a lot of traffic. We have done the odd national cycle route on-road and it's been fine. I don't want this to be a long-distance touring holiday for them, just use the bike to get around.

I have been Googling like a demon today and have found out a lot, but am hoping that someone with local knowledge will be able to fill in the remaining blanks for me:

1. Alnmouth Station to Alnwick - on the map there looks to be a quietish route heading south-west from the station and then northwest ish a couple of miles later. But it joins up with the A1068 and goes under the A1 on the outskirts of Alnwick. What I want to know is - is there a pavement at that point so we can get off and walk? And am I right about its being a quiet route up to that point?

2. As an alternative, there is (apparently) a river walk from Alnmouth to Alnwick, around 4 miles. Takes in some muddy field paths. Can anyone tell me if that is suitable for bikes (even if we have to get off and walk at some bits)? We are a bit spoiled in Scotland as bikes are allowed more or less anywhere a walker could go. But if some bits of this path are out of bounds to bikes, or if there are steps/ stiles etc, it would be useful to know.

3. Alnwick to Cragside (national trust property near Rothbury) - any quiet routes? We are used to detours!

4. Anything you'd recommend in the area for 2 rascals (with/ without bikes)? They seem strangely unenthused by Alnwick Castle Gardens and the book store ...

And - if you got this far - thanks for reading, hope you can help.

Alnwick Castle is where the first (and maybe second?) Harry Potter film was filmed!

Loads of lovely cycling areas around there, can't be more detailed I'm afriad. But there's the coastal route which is real nice. It maybe a bit far if you've got your kids with you, but Seahouses and Bamburgh would both be lovely places to visit (whether by bike or not!).

Hi, there is a path under the roundabout so you can get round it and it is pretty quiet up to that point but you're right about avoiding the A1068, it's a horrible road and I wouldn't advise cycling along it for any distance; it's narrow and the traffic goes pretty fast.

I can't help about the coastal path I'm afraid but once you get off the main roads there is very little traffic so some nice cycling.

With regard to Cragside, it's well worth a visit but to avoid but the B6341 which is the direct route you'd have quite a detour. It's also hilly around Rothbury, very beautiful though.

Alnwick Castle has a real dungeon! And although they may not be keen on the idea of the gardens they will like the massive fountain that gushes right into the air and gives you a good soaking from time to time. I love the bookstore and they're bound to find something they like.

I would also agree about Seahouses and Bamburgh, if you get good weather the beaches are fabulous. Fish and chips on the beach!

How about hiring a car big enough for bikes? then you could have the best of all worlds.

Towards Shilbottle? yes, that'll be a quiet road...

Not sure on this one...

If you DO fancy a detour, take B6341 as far as Lemmington Bank, turn up here, then head west (crossing A697) to Whittingham, Callaly, Lorbottle, Cartington, Thropton, then sometimes busy but rideable B6341 (again) approaches Rothbury from the west. Quite a big detour, but a lovely ride.

Deffo beaches. Seahouses is all sticks of rock, crazy golf, boat trips and rough round the edges. Bamburgh, up the road, is its posh cousin. Marvellous view of Bamburgh castle from Seahouses. Boat trip out to Farne Islands is a must... maybe head down coast to pleasant (hidden away) harbour at Beadnell. Have some kippers at Craster... nice pub there too with garden overlooking sea... from Craster, take a beautiful (occ busy with people) walk along coast path to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle... there's also another lovely Beachside pub (Ship Inn) at Low Newton by the Sea.

And - if you got this far - thanks for reading, hope you can help.

My pleasure... it's a beautiful part of the world

The Coast & Castles map from Sustrans shows you how to follow the national cycle route that passes near Alnwick.

This mostly follows very quiet roads, or in some parts purpose built cycle paths, and would be a very safe route for children. When I did it two years ago the terrain was hillier than I expected so you may not manage great distances with children your age.
